The Best of Giuseppe Fortunino Francesco Verdi (9 or 10 October 1813 -- 27 January 1901) Verdi is considered, together with Richard Wagner, the preeminent opera composer of the nineteenth century. Verdi dominated the Italian opera scene after the eras of Bellini, Donizetti and Rossini. His works are frequently performed in opera houses throughout the world and, transcending the boundaries of the genre, some of his themes have long since taken root in popular culture, as "La donna è mobile" from Rigoletto, "Libiamo ne' lieti calici" (The Drinking Song) from La traviata, "Va, pensiero" (The Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves) from Nabucco, the "Coro di zingari" (Anvil Chorus) from Il trovatore and the "Grand March" from Aida. Moved by the death of compatriot Alessandro Manzoni, Verdi wrote Messa da Requiem in 1874 in Manzoni's honour, a work now regarded as a masterpiece of the oratorio tradition and a testimony to his capacity outside the field of opera. Visionary and politically engaged, he remains -- alongside Garibaldi and Cavour -- an emblematic figure of the reunification process of the Italian peninsula (the Risorgimento). Verdi died in 1901, leaving behind some of the most admired operas of all time. His operas remain the most frequently performed in the world today. A magnificent spectacle of stars, scenery and choreography, this version of Verdi's Aïda is remastered from Sam Wanamaker's landmark production. It features monumental performances by Luciano Pavarotti as Radames and Margaret Price in the title role. The tensions which arise from Radames' love for Aida, a slave who is the daughter of the Ethiopian chieftain, Amonasro, and the jealousy this provokes in the daughter in Amneris, daughter of the Egyptian king, are portrayed in some of Verdi's most famous music. Nabucco (Italian pronunciation: [naˈbukko]; short for Nabucodonosor [naˌbukoˈdɔːnozor]~[naˌbukodonoˈzɔr], English Nebuchadnezzar) is an Italian-language opera in four acts composed in 1841 by Giuseppe Verdi to an Italian libretto by Temistocle Solera. The libretto is based on biblical stories from the Book of Jeremiah and the Book of Daniel and the 1836 play by Auguste Anicet-Bourgeois and Francis Cornue, although Antonio Cortese's ballet adaptation of the play (with its necessary simplifications), given at La Scala in 1836, was a more important source for Solera than the play itself.[1] Under its original name of Nabucodonosor, the opera was first performed at La Scala in Milan on 9 March 1842. Nabucco is the opera which is considered to have permanently established Verdi's reputation as a composer. He commented that "this is the opera with which my artistic career really begins. And though I had many difficulties to fight against, it is certain that Nabucco was born under a lucky star".[2] It follows the plight of the Jews as they are assaulted, conquered and subsequently exiled from their homeland by the Babylonian King Nabucco (in English, Nebuchadnezzar II). The historical events are used as background for a romantic and political plot. The best-known number from the opera is the "Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves", Va, pensiero, sull'ali dorate / "Fly, thought, on golden wings", a chorus which is regularly given an encore in many opera houses when performed today. FACEBOOK: https://www.facebook.com/classicalmelodieshq/ Un ballo in maschera (A Masked Ball) is an opera in three acts by Giuseppe Verdi with text by Antonio Somma. However, Somma's libretto was itself based on the five act libretto which playwright Eugène Scribe had written for Daniel Auber's 1833 opera, Gustave III, ou Le bal masqué.[1] Scribe wrote about the assassination in 1792 of King Gustav III of Sweden[2] who was killed as the result of a political conspiracy against him. He was shot while attending a masked ballroom dance and died 13 days later of his wounds. It was to take over two years between the time of the commission from Naples and planned for a production there and its premiere performance at the Teatro Apollo in Rome on 17 February 1859. In order to become the Un ballo in maschera which we know today, Verdi's opera (and his libretto) was forced to undergo a significant series of transformations and title changes. Based on the Scribe libretto and begun as Gustavo III set in Sweden, it became Una vendetta in dominò set in Germany, and finally Un ballo, set not in Sweden but in Boston, Massachusetts during the colonial era. These changes were caused by a combination of censorship regulations in both Naples and Rome, as well as by the political situation in France in January 1858. It became one of the most frustrating experiences of Verdi's career. From the mid-20th century, it has become more common for the setting to revert to its original 18th-century Stockholm location. A re-creation of the original Gustavo III has been staged in Sweden.

FACEBOOK: https://www.facebook.com/classicalmelodieshq/ La forza del destino (Italian pronunciation: [la ˈfɔrtsa del deˈstiːno]; The Power of Fate,[1] often translated The Force of Destiny) is an Italian opera by Giuseppe Verdi. The libretto was written by Francesco Maria Piave based on a Spanish drama, Don Álvaro o la fuerza del sino (1835), by Ángel de Saavedra, 3rd Duke of Rivas, with a scene adapted from Friedrich Schiller's Wallensteins Lager. It was first performed in the Bolshoi Kamenny Theatre of Saint Petersburg, Russia, on 10 November 1862 O.S. (N.S. 22 November). La forza del destino is frequently performed, and there have been a number of complete recordings. In addition, the overture (to the revised version of the opera) is part of the standard repertoire for orchestras, often played as the opening piece at concerts.(Wikipedia)

FACEBOOK : https://www.facebook.com/classicalmelodieshq/ Link libretto : https://mega.nz/#!ixhTmRKa!9k-UbV3jnI9nI6CnV4EqH1GQBeJYVudCC7FAOPu2ceU Aida (Italian: [aˈiːda]) is an opera in four acts by Giuseppe Verdi to an Italian libretto by Antonio Ghislanzoni. Set in Egypt, it was commissioned by and first performed at Cairo's Khedivial Opera House on 24 December 1871; Giovanni Bottesini conducted after Verdi himself withdrew. Today the work holds a central place in the operatic canon, receiving performances every year around the world; at New York's Metropolitan Opera alone, Aida has been sung more than 1,100 times since 1886. Ghislanzoni's scheme follows a scenario often attributed to the French Egyptologist Auguste Mariette, but Verdi biographer Mary Jane Phillips-Matz argues that the source is actually Temistocle Solera.(Wikipedia)

From the Mariinsky Theatre in St Petersburg, December 2012 Orchestra of the Mariinsky Theatre Valery Gergiev - conductor Arturo Gama - stage director Ildar Abdrazakov - Attila, King of the Huns Vladislav Sulimsky Ezio - a Roman General Anna Markarova Odabella - daughter of the Lord of Aquileia Sergei Skorokhodov Foresto - a Knight of Aquileia Mikhail Makarov Uldino - Attila’s slave Timur Abdikeyev Leone - an old Roman Guiseppe Verdi: Attila - dramma lirico in a prologue and three acts Based on Friedrich Werner’s "Attila, King of the Huns" this powerful and atmospheric opera puts the spotlight on celebrated Russian bass Ildar Abdrazakov in the title role. Set in the mid-5th century Attila focuses on the collapse of the Roman Empire and is a dramatic reflection on freedom, courage and hope. 0:55 Prologue As Attila and his warriors have triumphed over Italy. Attila’s prisoners include Odabella, the daughter of the ruler of Aquileia who fell on the battlefield. Odabella creates a great impression on Attila. He presents her with his sword and takes her into his entourage. Ezio, a Roman general, comes to parley with Attila, but the latter rejects his proposal. Meanwhile Foresto, Odabella’s betrothed, arrives at Rio-Alto and urges the refugees from Aquileia to build a new city – Venice. Act I Meeting Foresto, Odabella convinces him that she has not betrayed the Italian cause. She was merely awaiting an opportunity to settle accounts with the tyrant and kill him. Meanwhile, Attila is trying to shake off the memory of a nightmare he had the previous night: an imposing old man barred the Huns’ road to Rome. But his courage fails when the nightmare becomes a reality. Pope Leo enters the camp to prevent Attila’s advance on Rome. Attila recognises in him the old man from his dreams. Act II Foresto and Ezio, a guest at one of Attila’s banquets, lay plans for the defeat of the Huns. Foresto reveals that tonight the Huns’ leader is to be poisoned – the Roman warriors must be at the ready to attack the enemy camp at any moment. Sinister omens darken the atmosphere at the feast, and the king is only saved from being poisoned by Odabella’s intervention: unwilling to cede the right to revenge to anyone else, she warns Attila of the attempt on his life. Attila declares that she shall be his bride the next day and then he will lead his warriors to Rome. Taking advantage of the general rejoicing, the girl urges Foresto, who has tried to poison Attila, to flee. Act III During the wedding ceremony, the Romans surround the Huns’ camp and, when they attack, Odabella stabs Attila.

00:00:01 Act I 00:49:42 Act II 01:19:00Act III Un ballo in maschera (A Masked Ball) is an opera in three acts by Giuseppe Verdi with text by Antonio Somma. However, Somma's libretto was itself based on the five act libretto which playwright Eugène Scribe had written for Daniel Auber's 1833 opera, Gustave III, ou Le bal masqué. Scribe wrote about the assassination in 1792 of King Gustav III of Sweden who was killed as the result of a political conspiracy against him.
